Suami istri Maria dan Hermann terpisah di saat Hermann harus maju ke medan Perang Dunia II. Karena menyangka Hermann gugur di medan perang, Maria menjalin kasih dengan Bill, seorang serdadu Amerika. Namun ternyata Hermann pulang. Lika-liku hidup yang keras terus memaksa keduanya mengambil keputusan-keputusan kompromistis yang berbahaya, meskipun mereka masih saling mencintai. Apakah cinta mereka, meskipun tak pernah mati, akan sanggup jadi bahan bakar kehidupan keduanya?
Film The Marriage of Maria Braun menjadi terobosan karir bagi Rainer Werner Fassbinder. Meski tidak diajukan sebagai perwakilan Jerman Barat ke ajang Oscar, film ini masuk nominasi Film Berbahasa Asing Terbaik Golden Globe tahun 1980. Suksesnya film ini mengantar Fassbinder untuk membuat dua lagi film dengan tema “perempuan yang kuat”, yaitu Veronika Voss dan Lola, membentuk sebuah trilogi. Fakta bahwa triloginya disebut Trilogi BRD —merujuk ke nama resmi negaranya, Bundesrepublik Deutschland— menguatkan penafsiran bahwa karakter-karakternya merupakan metafora Jerman (Barat) yang mengalami perkembangan pesat dengan segala ongkosnya.

Maria and Hermann had to part ways due to his duty as a German soldier fighting in World War II. Falsely suspecting that Hermann had fallen in action, Maria forms a relationship with Bill, an American soldier. But then Hermann shows up, alive and kicking. The hardship of post-war (West) Germany forces them both to keep making risky decisions, even though they still love each other. Will their love last, or will it outlive their very own lives?
The Marriage of Maria Braun was Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s career breakthrough. Although it was not submitted to Oscar’s for Best Foreign Film, it was nominated in the 37th Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film in 1980. The critical and commercial success of this film prompted Fassbinder to create two more thematically-similar film, Veronika Voss and Lola, forming a trilogy. The very name of the trilogy, BRD Trilogy —from the official name of West Germany (and currently united Germany), Bundesrepublik Deutschland— implies that the characters were indeed the living souls of West Germany, which underwent rapid, and costly, post-war changes.
