Di Manchester by the Sea, Casey Affleck berperan sebagai Lee Chandler, seorang penyendiri yang menyimpan rahasia kelam di masa lalunya. Lee yang tinggal di kota Boston tiba-tiba mendapat telepon dari kerabatnya bahwa kakaknya yang tinggal di Manchester, Joe Chandler (Kyle Chandler), telah meninggal dunia. Lee pun akhirnya harus kembali Manchester yang merupakan tempat di mana rahasia kelam tersebut terkubur dalam. Semuanya semakin rumit karena almarhum Joe mempercayakan anak semata wayangnya, Patrick, kepada Lee.

In Manchester by the Sea, Casey Affleck plays Lee Chandler, a loner plumber who keeps a burden of a deep dark secret in the past. Lee who lives in a town neighbouring his eponymous hometown, has just got the news that his beloved brother, Joe Chandler (Kyle Chandler), has passed away. Lee reluctantly goes back to Manchester where his deep dark secret lies. Things get more complicated when his late brother had actually entrusted his son, Patrick, to Joe.
Manchester by the Sea is a story about the complexity of forgiveness—not just forgiving other people who've caused you pain, but forgiving yourself for inflicting pain on others. It's a story about parenting, of the biological, foster and improvised kind. It might make you sad and gloomy and probably make you cry... but when it comes to forgiving oneself, these emotions are very much expected, almost required.
