In the midst of Indonesian revolutionary struggle toward independence, almost everyone was jumping the bandwagon. In Medan, one of the almost forgotten power center of the archipelago, Naga Bonar (Deddy Mizwar) is a mixed bag: a pickpocket-crook with a heart of gold, rose to the call of struggle and appointed himself a "general". And of course he's not alone. In a band of rookie warriors, along with beautiful Kirana (Nurul Arifin) and a nagging mother, Naga Bonar found himself surrounded by the opportunistic and the simply crooks, inciting internal conflict, among others, over a botched chess match. The satirical tone enhances the comedy in this drama, unusually told about the usually glorified period of Indonesian history.
