Kisah dalam The Young Girls of Rochefort berlangsung dalam satu akhir pekan yang meriah di kota pantai Rochefort, ketika sebuah pesta karnaval dilaksanakan di alun-alun kota. "The Young Girls of Rochefort" takes place over the course of one weekend in the seaside town of Rochefort, where a fair is coming to the town square. The story centers on twin sisters Delphine (Catherine Deneuve) and Solange (Françoise Dorléac)— Delphine teaches ballet classes and Solange gives music lessons for a living, but each longs to find her ideal love and a life outside of Rochefort.
To play the twin sisters in the film Jacques Demy casted two actress who are sisters in real life --Dorléac is the elder sister of Deneuve. The director also collaborated again with Michel Legrand to compose the score of the film to Demy’s lyrics. this collaboration lead to a nomination for an Academy Awards for Best Original Score (Original or Adaptation).
