Di sebuah kota kecil di pesisir utara Jerman Timur, Barbara (Nina Hoss), seorang dokter pindahan dari Berlin mempesona koleganya (Ronald Zehrfeld), sekaligus memicu teka-teki. Siapa dia, apa yang terjadi dengannya sehingga terdampar di kota kecil ini? Dalam sistem yang opresif sempurna, setiap orang dipaksa memilih status sebagai korban atau pelaku, tanpa alternatif lain. Barbara berusaha meninggalkan pilihan yang mencekik itu. Ataukah justru ada pilihan lain yang bisa ia ciptakan?

Barbara (Nina Hoss) lives in a small town by the north shore of East Germany. She is a medical doctor who used to live in Berlin. As a newcomer, she captures the attention of her colleague (Ronald Zehrfeld) who sees her as an enigma. Who is this beauty and why is she stranded in such a small town? In a perfectly oppressing system, each individual is forced to choose, either be a victim or an oppressor. It looks like there is no other choice. Yet Barbara refuses this frustrating situation and struggles to hold on to her own choices. She might just come up with another option.
