Sebagai penulis naskah yang belum punya karya terobosan, Paul (Michel Piccoli) dan istrinya Camille (Brigitte Bardot) menjalani hidup yang begitu-begitu saja, dengan romansa yang hangat-hangat tahi ayam. Begitu Paul mendapatkan peluangnya untuk sukses di film, dia tidak ambil pusing lagi. Naskahnya akan dibuat film oleh Fritz Lang! (yang di film ini berperan sebagai dirinya sendiri) Namun produsernya adalah Prokosch (Jack Palance), seorang Amerika yang dangkal dan omong besar, tetapi tentu saja berduit. Paul nampaknya tidak keberatan. Ketika Camille mendapati bahwa Paul tidak membelanya di saat Prokosch bertindak tidak patut, Camille mulai curiga bahwa suaminya diam-diam “menghadiahkan” dirinya ke sang produser. Maka ia pun memutuskan untuk benar-benar berselingkuh dengan Prokosch, dengan hasil yang tragis.
Contempt adalah film berwarna pertama Jean-Luc Godard, dan pertama kalinya pula ia mencoba berkompromi dengan industri. Hasilnya adalah rasa jijiknya yang tak berkesudahan kepada norma-norma Hollywood, yang ia tuangkan pula dalam film ini. Bisa dibilang, tokoh Paul adalah cerminan dirinya dalam menghadapi industri komersial film, sementara Fritz Lang menjadi cerminan cita-citanya sendiri. Film masterpiece ini direstorasi di tahun 1997, disponsori oleh Martin Scorsese.

As a struggling playwright yet to make a break, Paul (Michel Piccoli) lives with his wife Camille (Brigitte Bardot) in a lukewarm relationship, devoid of any passion. But then a window of opportunity breaks in: an American producer wants to hire him to write a screenplay which will be directed by Fritz Lang, no less! The slight problem is that the producer, Prokosch (Jack Palance), is a vulgar and tasteless man. And it shows everytime he meddles with the filmmaking. When he made an indecent approach on Camille, Camille is caught in a horror learning that her husband didn’t react. Could he already “presented” her to Prokosch as some kind of gratuity? Her unanswered anxiety, combined with toxic and contemptuous relationship around, lead her to succumb to Prokosch’s seduction, with tragic result.
Contempt was Jean-Luc Godard’s first coloured film, as well as his first attempt to compromise with the commercial film scene. It resulted in his own contempt against the Hollywood-laden values, which itself shown clearly in this film, covered under a plot of filmmaking and subplot of a dead relationship. The Paul character was interpreted as Godard’s own surrogate, while Fritz Lang, who played himself, was Godard’s dream of being. The film was restored in 1997, sponsored by Martin Scorsese.
